Can CPAs be Visionaries?

You can get your partners and staff to become creative visionaries through brainstorming sessions, which not only can allow people to tap into their unrealized creativity, but also demonstrate the managing partner’s leadership qualities (assuming he or she leads the session). Here are some tips for conducting the session:

• Participants should be informed of the purpose of the session and asked to bring specific ideas with them.
• Assume that everyone has something to offer. Don’t exclude people.
• Whatever the specific problem or issue being discussed, try to look at it from several different angles.
• Use flip charts to record every suggestion. Don’t evaluate the wisdom of the offerings—just explore them.
• Create nightmarish scenarios, i.e., paint a picture of the worst possible events, ones that might destroy the firm, and develop remedies for them.
