If important information is communicated via the grapevine, you risk distortion and misunderstanding, which can have obvious negative consequences. Any firm, small or large, can conduct effective meetings. A meeting is the only way to accommodate all the communication preferences within your organization — visual, auditory, and print.

What should you do at a firm meeting? Here are some suggestions:

  • Discuss how the firm is doing.
  • Discuss changes in the firm, e.g., downsizing or reorganizing.
  • Inform people about noteworthy achievements or growth of the firm.
  • Introduce new rules and regulations that affect the firm’s work.
  • Introduce new staff.
  • Describe products/services provided by the firm.
  • Reveal merger activity/introduce people from the merged firm.
  • Celebrate promotions or achievements of personnel.
  • Use this forum as a way to communicate how important your people are to the firm.

The managing partner need not make the entire presentation. Other partners and staff members can be presenters. Some firms develop themes for their meetings and try to use entertainment formats. For an example, see the complete article.
