So You Think You Can Create a Firm Culture

So You Think You Can Create a Firm Culture

The following is based on an article by Dr. Gary Bradt, one of today's most popular speakers on the leadership circuit (www.garybradt.com).

A culture for a successful firm will generally include:
  • Serving clients.
  • Continual growth.
  • Helping employees' personal development.
Firm cultures can be created by behavior, not by articulation. Start by identifying three or four principles that will guide the firm. That should be easy. Then use these principles constantly to direct your decision-making.

Examples of behaving in accordance with the firm's culture are to predicate every decision on whether it will help your clients and to be constantly on the lookout for job assignments that will help someone or some group grow.

Performance of everyone in the firm should be evaluated in accordance with their adherence to the firm's guiding principles.

Hire people whose personalities mesh with the firm's culture.

Although the culture can't be established or changed by words, you should use all available communication methods to continually reinforce your guiding principles.
