There’s More to Delegating than Delegating
Source: Accounting Today
In this article, Glenn Hunter (director of business development, Rainmaker Academy, Nashville, Tennessee) says delegating is much more than handing off an assignment to a partner or staff member. It also requires setting up accountability and:
- Giving the responsible person detailed instructions, including deadlines.
- Agreeing on whether other assignments or this one take precedence.
- Communicating on the status and performance quality of the assignment.
The person to whom you delegate must be capable of handling the assignment. The amount of detailed instructions should be consistent with the experience and ability of the person to whom you are giving the assignment. If the work being delegated is beyond the person’s experience, you have the opportunity to help that person grow.
