The Changing Face of CPE

The content of CPE is changing rapidly for small firms as well as large firms:

  • Global standards are changing and becoming more principles-based.
  • Investing in the education of people reduces risk.
  • More than technical training is required. At one national firm, about half the training is in “soft skills,” e.g., how to identify and help clients with their less obvious needs.

A joint survey by Capstone Marketing and CPA Trendlines reveals clear differences between the best CPA firms and the others. The best firms are:

  • Twice as likely to provide needed training.
  • Five times as likely to consider staff’s personal goals in developing training programs.
  • Eight times as likely to link training to the firm’s strategy.

Results from small firms are similar to those from large firms.
