Accent on Human Capital

At the Winning is Everything Conference in Las Vegas, the accent was on human capital. Participants were advised by Gary Boomer to: “Hire smart, non-accounting individuals in IT, finance, service areas and firm administration Once you have them, spend more time in the ‘training function’ of the firm in order to retain those people.”
Gary Shamis of SS&G Financial Services spoke about developing a committee that advises management on how to retain people. The committee bases its advice on staff critiques.
Howard Putnam of Howard Putnam Enterprises spoke about the importance of hiring people whose attitudes are compatible with the vision and culture of the firm. He noted that influencing people to change their attitudes is more difficult than training them in technical areas.
