Solving Management Problems Through Training

Solving Management Problems Through Training

This case study on the implementation of a paperless system in a 30-person firm, was written by L. Gary Boomer, Boomer Consulting, Manhattan, Kansas. The firm was in the midst of conversion to a document management system in February, when the entire firm became disillusioned with the project because it was just too difficult to change from the existing system. The managing partner perceived a reluctance to stop using paper. He set up a task force to review the problem, and they concluded that more practical training was needed. They decided to do it immediately. They engaged the services of the head of training from a large accounting firm in another state.

Everyone in the firm went through three days of training in the middle of February. The trainer had been through this problem before. He suggested they begin with development of standards and procedures. This took about a day and a half. The next day and a half was spent in training the partners and staff on the new procedures and use of the software. After the training, they had a good understanding of the flow of the work, from the time it comes in until the delivery of the finished product. The result was success, attributable to a dedicated leader who understands the value of training, and a staff willing to learn.
