How to Deal with Conflict

How to Deal with Conflict

Conflict can arise from:

  • Failure to listen—thinking about something else when someone is talking.
  • Inability to see someone else’s point of view.
  • Failure to be empathetic.
  • Misconstruing someone’s motivations.

How to neutralize conflict:

  • Respond to someone by paraphrasing what he or she said and asking for confirmation.
  • Express agreement with those parts of the person’s statement that you genuinely agree with.
  • Show that you can identify with the speaker’s point of view.
  • Try to come to an agreement with the other person on what will be done next.
