Partner goals should be set in eight areas:

  1. Production—these are goals for billings and collections. Nonbillable time should also be covered.
  2. Improvement in productivity—being more efficient, working on higher value engagements, working more hours. In each case the partner should describe how these goals will be achieved.
  3. New business—detailed strategies for new client development. Explain in detail the activities that will be engaged in.
  4. Furthering the team approach—plans for introducing clients to specialists in the firm, and for delegating client supervision to others.
  5. Quality—detailed plans for developing systems for improving quality.
  6. Professional development—describe the CPE plan, association participation, and new skill development.
  7. Management—describe planned firm management activity including participation on a management committee, compensation committee, recruiting committee, etc.
  8. Weaknesses—describe plans to improve weak areas.
