L. Gary Boomer, of Boomer Consulting in Manhattan, Kansas, says, “Great partners make great accounting firms.” He lists six characteristics of great partners:

  1. Commitment to an extraordinary vision and growth. Without growth the firm cannot attract and keep good people.
  2. Ability to delegate. Managing means managing people as well as client relationships.
  3. Respect for other people and their unique abilities, whether those abilities are in accounting or other areas such as professional management.
  4. Commitment to enhancement of personal skills.
  5. Commitment to a culture in which everyone in the firm learns and teaches. Such a culture helps attract and keep staff, a major role for partners.
  6. Development of challenges and rewards for staff. Outsourcing rote work provides more opportunities for new challenges.
