L. Gary Boomer, president of Boomer Consulting, Manhattan, Kansas, give some outside the box ideas on recruiting.

  • Redefine some of your job descriptions and create jobs that can be performed by non-accountants.
  • Become a learning organization. Candidates want to work for firms that will help them continually grow.
  • Be open about your plans. Candidates want to work for firms that have long term goals, and they want to know how they fit into plans for achievement of those goals.
  • Improve technology. Candidates want to work for firms that provide them with the best tools.
  • Keep records that will facilitate contacting former employees (they may be disappointed in the new job they chose), former candidates you might not have needed at the time they applied, or former candidates who were qualified, but not for the position you needed to fill at the time.
  • Use current staff as a source of new recruits, and provide rewards.
  • Post job openings on your Web site and provide a system for depositing resumes electronically.
  • If you take on summer interns, consider using freshmen and sophomores.
  • Send your most enthusiastic but professional people to job fairs.
  • Have an open house and invite candidates. It’s a good way to show off the firm, while getting to know the potential candidates in a way not possible through interviews. One firm did this in cooperation with a local university. They performed a skit that informed people about the firm.
