Here is what some firms are doing this tax season:
- Hiring interns and giving them thorough tax training.
- Implementing paperless processes—staff can work on returns from home.
- Sending electronic organizers to clients.
- Filing more returns electronically.
- Hiring 1040 specialists.
- Matching clients with staff most appropriate for sophistication of the work.
- Using financial planning affiliates to facilitate earlier access to client data.
- Cross-selling to financial planning affiliates—asking questions such as whether the client has a will, is satisfied with his or her current financial advisor, or has had a review of insurance requirements. Clients like one-stop shopping.
- Using technology to improve productivity—moving from Novell Network to Windows 2003 Server, and switching from Novell GroupWise e-mail to Outlook/Exchange.
- Using laptops that operate through Citrix and link to the firm’s servers, providing additional security over e-mail.
- Using dual monitors—one for work-paper preparation, the other for tax return input.
- Setting up a group to work on tax returns for public company executives.
