Just like doctors in a hospital, CPA firm leaders can do daily (or several times a week), rounds to demonstrate they care. Here’s how to do rounds:
- Let the staff know what you are going to do. Let them know you want to find out what works and what doesn’t work in the firm.
- Be prepared with knowledge about what is going on in the firm.
- Get personal with the staff.
- Bring up issues from the last time you made rounds. Show them you are dealing with their problems. (Keep a written record of what was said.)
- Ask them:
- Who deserves special recognition? (and give it to them)
- Whether they have the tools they need to do their jobs?
- What can leadership improve on?
- What else do they want to tell you?
