L. Gary Boomer, president of Boomer Consulting in Manhattan, Kansas, suggests a checklist to evaluate the health of your technology:

• Is the time and billing system interfaced with the general ledger, accounts receivable and payable, and payroll?
• Are you using spreadsheets for management reports?
• Are financial statements prepared timely and correctly?
• Do you have a scheduling and workflow process interfaced with client and employee information?
• Are financial statements created from Word or Excel?
• Do you have check-in/check-out and version controls?
• Does the system control e-mail?
• Can you and clients access client data at any time?
• Do you use data-extraction and analytical programs interfaced with workpaper content managers?
• Are all procedures documented?
• Do you have good training programs for partners as well as staff?
• Do you have too many applications running on your servers?
• Do you avoid using both paper and digital systems?
