Breathing New Life into Leadership

Breathing New Life into Leadership

In his book Leadershift: Reinventing Leadership for the Age of Mass Collaboration, Emmanuel Gobillot suggests that leadership will become irrelevant, absent some major changes. Four trends lead him to this conclusion:

  • Expertise and value creation are taking place outside organizational boundaries.
  • Readily available social networks are competing for workers' attention.
  • A trend away from positional power and toward democracy.

According to Gobillot, leadership in this new environment — what he refers to as “network leadership” — is about facilitating conversations, developing the organization's “narrative,” simplifying things, connecting to peoples' emotions, and focusing less on formal hierarchy and more on the tasks that need to be done.
