Don't Lose Sight of the Goal

In this blog entry, Dustin Hostetler explains why he universally recommends that his clients read The Goal, by Eli Goldratt. Taking the form of a novel, the book “sheds a bright light on a simple principle that all of us know but sometimes forget in practice: The goal of a business is to make money.” Although the book focuses on a manufacturing business, Hostetler says that CPAs often tell him “I can see my firm in that story.”
While the principle seems obvious, it's easy for firms to get off track. “I see firms all the time,” Hostetler explains, that “have set up processes, metrics, and policies that when you really boil it down and say ‘Is this helping the firm make money?' the answer is an obvious ‘NO.'”
“If you could get a majority of your team, from staff to partner, to list several ways at the end of every day that they have helped the firm make money and helped a client make money,” Hostetler says, “all those historical/traditional metrics wouldn't matter. The results (and profits) will take care of themselves.”
