Empower Your Team to Succeed

In this article, Gary L. Boomer challenges accounting firm leaders to consider whether they lead in a way that increases or limits the talents, skills, and productivity of their staff. According to Boomer, the current economy is forcing firms to do more with less, including staff. Boomer says that leaders who limit the capacity of their staff do so because they are stuck in an individualistic mindset, determined to work hard, but perhaps unwilling to make necessary changes or empower team members according to their abilities.
On the other hand, leaders who get the most productivity and creativity out of their teams are willing to utilize the skill sets of their employees. They attract highly skilled workers and give them work that best suits their abilities. They maintain an atmosphere of accountability, raise important questions, and set high expectations. According to Boomer, these leaders are not only successful, but they also will not be left behind because they are willing to make necessary changes, such as taking a new approach to working with small businesses or embracing new technology that serves the firm and its clients better.
