How Best Practices Inhibit Innovation

How Best Practices Inhibit Innovation

Source: Flowtivity

In this blog entry, Dustin Hostetler suggests that focusing on best practices – or “yesterday's solutions” – gets in the way of creativity and innovation. He believes it encourages mediocrity in CPA firms, especially when firms or associations hold “best practice roundtables” with like-minded participants.

To foster innovation, Hostetler suggests that CPAs challenge “traditional paradigms,” think more creatively, and “create more diversity in thought.” Innovation, he says, “comes at the intersection of multi-disciplinary collaboration.” He encourages firms, for example, to include “rising star managers” in managing partner roundtable discussions or to bring technological neophytes into technology collaborations.
