Reach Your Goals

In this video, Gary Boomer gives insights as to how partners and firms can accomplish their goals. Here are some of Boomer's insights:
- Partners tend to hold others accountable, but not themselves. Partners have to hold themselves accountable, and allow themselves to be managed. Boomer, who was partner in a firm for 20 years, realized he could make more money if he allowed himself to be managed.
- Routinely assess your priorities and progress. Boomer recommends holding yourself accountable about every 90 days. Partners need to set the example for personal accountability. According to Boomer, if done correctly, periodic accountability throughout the team can result in a more satisfied staff and higher retention.
- Partners often don't know technology. They need to consider bringing on an IT professional who is not just experienced with technology, but who can help the firm meet its strategic goals. According to Boomer, the IT role is essentially becoming a CIO. Boomer says that person doesn't have to be a CPA. A CIO can be critical to your success if they have the right IT skills combined with an ability to communicate, organize, team-build and apply business savvy.
- “Hope is not a strategy,” said Boomer. In other words, hope has good intentions, but good intentions don't get things done. If your firm really wants to accomplish its goals, it needs a leader with the passion to help you stay committed through the challenges you face.
