Stop Working the Way You Used to Work

Stop Working the Way You Used to Work

In a recent blog entry Dustin Hostetler says "If you keep doing what you've been doing, you'll keep getting what you've been getting."

"In the past couple of weeks I've [witnessed] a partner-level individual expressing his frustration for the amount of work that continues to pile up. . . . As we started to go down the 'why' path . . . it became pretty apparent there were multitudes of opportunities to move work to a more appropriate level. Just because it had always been done a certain way in the past, doesn't mean that is still optimal. And once you begin to see it's okay to let go of some control, and that the work will ultimately get done in a more timely manner while still maintaining good quality, it's easy to make it happen."

In another case "a mid-level manager was . . . overwhelmed and working a ton of hours to just try to keep up. [W]e mutually discovered a lot of duplicative work [that] you don't think to question [because] it was the way it was always done. But when taking the time to look at it from a different/outside perspective, it really didn't make a whole lot of sense."

"It takes a paradigm shift to start looking at things like an outsider."
