Following are excerpts from Rick Telberg's July 21, 2010, blog post, reproduced with permission.

Lisa Barone at Outspoken Media, Inc. says small businesses like accounting firms can use Twitter as a way “to find new leads, to build relationships, and as an overall way to cost effectively market their business.”

Here are just a few of Barone's 80 ideas:

Build Credibility

  • Answer common customer questions.
  • Share insight and opinion.
  • Pass on interesting links/posts.

Market Your Business

  • Offer discounts, coupons or special offers to customers who find you via social media.
  • Market your business in order to get blog subscribers.
  • Market your business in order to direct traffic to your site.
  • Publish your Twitter handle on all direct mailings, email newsletters, your website and all other marketing channels. Put it everywhere.

Grow Ears

  • Track conversations about your brand for online reputation management.
  • Track your most important keywords and subscribe to an RSS feed.
  • Do free market research to see what people want/don't want.
  • Ask people for their opinions. Listen to them.

Grow Your Online Network

  • Connect more personally with contacts from other social networks.
  • Use relationship building instead of cold calls and cheesy flyers.
  • Connect your Twitter account to LinkedIn. And to your Facebook account. And to your website. And anywhere else you can to make your site more social.

Grow Your Offline Network

  • Hold tweetups and introduce your community members in real life.
  • Find new customers by using the Advanced Search to track down local conversations.
  • Offer coupons to encourage community members to make purchases in-store.

Have Fun

  • Become a better writer.
  • Share content that makes you laugh.
  • Find content that inspires and motivates you.
  • Make friendships, not just professional relationships.
