Why it's Great to Be a Small Firm

Some of my favorite and most successful clients are smaller CPA firm leaders.

For the purpose of this post, I am talking about sole practitioners. Or, maybe I should say sole owners because being a “sole” doesn't mean you don't employ a number of great team members.

Advantages of being a sole:

  • Quicker decision-making.
  • Ability to quickly implement the newest and coolest ideas. (I am often amazed when I hear of very small firms that are not paperless yet. It is so much easier with a small firm with fewer people to train and win over.)
  • Clear, concise communication is easier (or it should be!).
  • Freedom to try things, make mistakes and learn from them (without justifying everything to your partners).
  • Not as many operational and administrative layers; more time to focus on clients and client service.
  • Quicker implementation of the latest technology (again, not as many people to train and not as many political battles).
  • I find great loyalty from team members inside small firms; they really feel and act like it is their firm.

People working for a firm that has grown during the last “boom” years, sometimes tend to look down on small firms and sole practitioners. Perhaps, they should think again. I find that sole practitioners are a whole lot happier than many of my other clients and friends who are in larger firms.
