Interviews of practitioners and consultants revealed these hurdles to implementing document management systems:
- Making the psychological adjustment to give up paper.
- Selecting the right software that will store documents similarly to the firm’s paper system.
- Creating a document trail so client documents don’t get overlooked.
- The high cost of hardware, software, and professional services.
- Scanning in the field is cumbersome.
- Getting management of the firm to understand the potential returns on the investment.
- Matching the system with the firm’s expectations.
- One firm installed a system that provided a paperless solution, but did not have a workflow component, which is what the firm really needed.
- Getting even the technology people to take the leap of faith required to actually be paperless.
